9 Rejections for Zoom’s CEO

by | Feb 22, 2022

Can you think of anyone in your social circle who’s never been on a Zoom call before?

I know I can’t.

May it be for online classes or remote work collaboration…

Zoom has found its way into the average person’s daily life, especially now.

But did you know that the founder of Zoom almost never made it to Silicon Valley

You see, Eric Yuan was a freshman in a university in China when he first envisioned Zoom.

He had to take ten-hour train rides to visit his then-girlfriend who studied in a school halfway across the country.

…and he hated it!

Eric then started dreaming about a way to meet his girlfriend without the long-distance travel.

So, when he graduated college in the mid-’90s…

He decided to come to the U.S. to make his dream a reality.

At that time, the Internet hadn’t taken off in China yet. But it was already making waves in the U.S.

And Eric knew he had to make it to Silicon Valley to get investors for his dream venture.

But here’s the thing…

When he first applied for a U.S. visa, his application was rejected!

And when he reapplied, he was once again refused entry to the U.S.

But Eric wasn’t fazed.

He continued to apply again and again over the course of two years…

…and finally obtained his visa on his ninth try.

He was then able to connect with engineers and investors that helped him build the company we rely on so much today.

The power of persistance!

Now, I am not saying to bang your head against the wall.

If the market is telling you something is not working, sometimes trying something new can be the best option.

However, what I am saying is even if you “course correct” on the way, keep moving in the direction of your dreams.

I tried a few different things before I found the online business that really took off for me.

Success doesn’t happen in a straight line.

It’s more like this.

So wherever you are right now is perfect.

Just keep going and testing stuff in the real world – so you get meaningful data.

And, before you know it, you’ll be much closer to your success destination than you ever thought possible.
